SAN DIEGO — California drivers who hate their DMV photo may soon have an option to replace it.

AB 2045 , a California bill proposed this week by Assemblyman Phillip Chen, R-Diamond Bar, would allow a licensee to request up to three extra photos be taken for up to $5 each.

That revenue would then be deposited into the state's transportation fund to support driver education and training programs.

If passed, the bill would go into effect Jan. 1, 2022. The bill is set to be heard in committee this March.

AB 2045 is the latest attempt in recent years to harness a potential profit off of driver license photos. In 2018, SB 1407 was proposed to allow drivers to take up to three photos and then choose their favorite for a small fee. That bill died in the legislature later in 2018.
