Could cockroach milk be a superfood?

Posted

Could cockroaches feed the world?

Probably not, but the milk from a certain type of cockroach has scientists dreaming.

Scientists have found a protein crystal in the bugs that is four times as nutritious as cow's milk and could help feed the world's population, according to Science Alert.

Most cockroaches do not produce milk, according to the research, but a certain type of cockroach, Diploptera punctate, uses protein crystals of milk to feed its young.

Now there's a group at the Institute of Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine working to replicate the crystals in a lab, according to Science Alert.

"It's time-released food," the research group' Ramaswamy group said in an interview with Times of India. "If you need food that is calorifically high, that is time released and food that is complete. This is it".
