The Department of Defense has announced a streamlined process for child beneficiaries of the survivor benefit plan to certify that they are full-time students.

The plan annuity is paid to children of fallen service members and deceased military retirees. It typically ends when a child turns 18 but it may continue to age 22 as long as the recipient is attending school fulltime.

The law requires certification when a child turns of age but due to the current COVID-19 crisis, this has deemed particularly frustrating for students.

The DOD has provided an updated form and streamlined process to improve timeliness and efficiency so that survivors continue receiving this benefit.

DD form 27-88 can be found at the DOD's website.
