A Michigan dentist facing over two dozen charges in a Medicaid fraud scheme was arrested last week in the Dominican Republic, according to Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette.

David Johnson, 51, is facing 27 separate felony charges in relation to the scheme operated through Livernois Dental in Detroit.

Since the charges were issued, he has been moving outside of the country until U.S. Marshals caught up with him last week.

“Medical professionals are expected to conduct themselves with integrity and adherence to the law. A deliberate attempt to take advantage of the Medicaid system shows no regard for the law and violators will face the consequences of their actions,” Schuette in a release.

Johnson is charged with one count of racketeering, 20 counts of Medicaid fraud and six counts of health care fraud.

He has been returned to the U.S. and is in Miami. He waived extradition and will be transported back to Michigan in the coming weeks to be arraigned in Ingham County.
