NFL will soon announce TV commercial break and in-game timing changes

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said the National Football League is considering changes to in-game timing as well as timing of TV commercials to improve game-watching experience.

In his pre-Super Bowl news conference in February, Goodell said there could be a reduction from five TV time outs per football game quarter to four.

An interview with USA Today published Wednesday, March 22 said the NFL sees a changing media landscape and that it needs to address how games are consumed by fans, and when they are most or least interested in what they're watching. Goodell told the newspaper while commercial breaks will happen less often, they will be slightly longer, extending 30 seconds.

In 2016, the league experimented with how many ads appeared in commercial breaks. The move was likely in response to declining viewership last season.

Goodell told USA Today the NFL's plans will roll out in the next few days.
