Playground equipment recalled after amputations

and last updated

About 1,300 stainless steel slides used in school and public playgrounds have been recalled by the manufacturer following reports of two children who suffered finger amputations.

Playworld voluntary recalled the Lightning Slide after 13 incidents of broken welds on the slide, where the slide bed and sidewall cracked. Children can get their fingers caught in this space, leading to possible amputation.

The slides were sold independent distributors to parks, schools and municipalities from November 2000 through October 2016 for between $1,500 and $4,000.

Playworld advised consumers to immediately stop using the recalled slides and contact them for a free replacement slide and free installation. A temporary barrier will be shipped to consumers prior to shipment of a replacement slide to prevent children from using the slide.

The company is contacting consumers who purchased the slides directly.
