Police in New Jersey are investigating after a Tinder meetup led to a family dog being stolen.

According to police, an 18-year-old was house sitting for a family in Leonia, N.J. while they were out of state.

She was responsible for watching the house and family dog while they were away.

On Sunday the house sitter was using the social media dating app Tinder and met a man online. She invited him to the house, and he arrived with another man.

While one of the men distracted the house sitter, the other was alone in the house.

Shortly after they left, she discovered that a laptop and package from Amazon were stolen, but also missing was the family dog, a 2-year-old white Maltese named Maggie.

The department is looking for anyone who may have seen Maggie or who has information about the case.

In the meantime, they want to remind the public of the following safety tips for social media apps:

  • Do not share personal/financial information on social media.
  • Meet in a public place when meeting for the first time
  • Tell family and friends when meeting someone new for the first time.
