and last updated

A Highlands County, Florida resident has died from rabies after being bitten by a bat, the Florida Department of Health has confirmed.

The DOH says that the disease was likely transmitted when the individual was bitten by the bat. They say that the individual did not seek treatment at that time and did not receive rabies post-exposure prophylaxis. The individual passed away from the rabies infection.

DOH says that it is important to avoid direct contact with wildlife. If you believe you may have been exposed to rabies, including any physical contact with a bat, contact your health care provider and your county health department right away.

If an exposure occurred, it is important to administer treatment in a timely manner. For more information on rabies, click here.
