School cafeteria worker quits, citing 'shameful' lunch policy

Posted
A school Pennsylvania cafeteria worker has reportedly quit her job following the introduction of a new lunch policy.

According to Time, that policy – which is in effect at Wylandville Elementary School -- denies hot lunches to students with negative balances on their lunch accounts.

Students between kindergarten through sixth grade apparently lose their hot lunches and are instead charged for a cold sandwich, fruit and milk. Meanwhile, students in seventh grade and above aren't given any lunch at all.

Cafeteria worker Stacy Koltiska said the new policy required her to take a hot lunch from a hungry first-grade boy, instead swapping his chicken for a cold cheese sandwich.

Koltiska said she loved “the joy and excitement the younger children got from something as simple as a school lunch.”

“I will never forget the look on his face and then his eyes welled up with tears,” she wrote on Facebook.

School officials explained to local media outlet WTAE that the policy was simply implemented to cut down on the amount of money that parents owed the district – and that so far, it has worked.
