The Washington Post is reporting that Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump won’t support House Speaker Paul Ryan or Sen. John McCain in their upcoming primaries.
“I like Paul, but these are horrible times for our country,” Trump said, according to the Post. “We need very strong leadership. We need very, very strong leadership. And I’m just not quite there yet. I’m not quite there yet.”
Ryan, the highest ranking elected Republican, endorsed Trump for president in June. Ryan was also one of just a handful of Republican leaders that attended Trump’s convention in Cleveland in July.
The report comes days after both Ryan and McCain issued statements denouncing comments made by Trump in response to the family of a fallen Muslim soldier at the Democratic National Convention.
"I cannot emphasize enough how deeply I disagree with Mr. Trump’s statement," McCain said. "I hope Americans understand that the remarks do not represent the views of our Republican Party, its officers or candidates."
McCain, who originally endorsed the New York businessman in May, reiterated his support for Trump later on in his statement.
"Many Muslim Americans have served valiantly in our military and made the ultimate sacrifice," Ryan’s statement read. "Capt. Khan was one such brave example. His sacrifice — and that of Khizr and Ghazala Khan — should always be honored. Period."
Ryan’s primary election in Wisconsin is scheduled for August 9, while McCain’s Senate primary in Arizona is scheduled for August 30.
