WASHINGTON, D.C. — According to U.S. officials, Michael White, a navy veteran who was detained in Iran for a little under two years was finally released.
“The nightmare is over,” his mother said.
White was detained by Iranian authorities in 2018.
He was in Iran to meet a woman he had fallen in love with, but he was later detained after being convicted of insulting Iran's leader and posting private information online, a grievance that could result in heavy consequences, White was sentence to a decade in prison.
White's release was negotiated as part of an agreement involving an Iranian-American doctor, prosecuted by the Justice Department.
Following negotiations, White, is finally making his way home.
