Whataburger sued for allegedly only hiring whites

Posted

Fast food chain Whataburger is facing an EEOC lawsuit filed in United States federal court after being accused of only interviewing white people, the Miami Herald reported.

Vanessa Burrous, a former Whataburger management trainee, said managers instructed her to only interview white applicants for positions at a Tallahassee location. Burrous said the direction came from company leaders in Texas.

In a statement to the Miami Herald, Whataburger denied the accusations.

“Based on our thorough internal investigation, we deny the allegations," the statement read. "We did not retaliate against this employee nor did we ask her to use the alleged discriminatory hiring practices. We value diversity on our teams and proudly employ family members of all races. Approximately 75 percent of our workforce identifies as non-white."

Burrous claimed that she was reprimanded when she hired a group of African-American applicants, the Miami Herald reported.

Whataburger has more than 800 locations nationwide, and employs roughly 22,000.
