What's at stake Saturday for Democrats

and last updated

Democrats in three states caucus on Saturday on a day expected to be more favorable to Sen. Bernie Sanders than nomination front-runner Hillary Clinton.

A total of 142 delegates are up for grabs, with 101 of those delegates coming from the state of Washington. Alaska has 16 delegates available, and 25 delegates are available out of Hawaii.

In pledged delegates, Clinton leads Sanders 1,223 to 920, according to Associated Press figures. When super delegates are included, Clinton runs away with the delegate count by a 1,691 to 949 margin. The magic number to clinch the nomination is 2,383 delegates.

Sanders is coming off a decent showing on Tuesday, taking two out of three states. Sanders won the states of Utah and Idaho by a better than 3-to-1 margin.

Because Democrats award delegates on a proportional basis,Sanders does not just need to win, but he needs to win big in the remaining contests to catch Clinton. Today is a day Sanders is expected to do well in as he has won the majority of caucus events, whereas Clinton has done better in primary contests.
