A large crowd gathered in downtown Los Angeles Tuesday night prompting police to declare it an unlawful assembly. The group, many of them dressed in black, gathered near the Staples Center.

Los Angeles police said officers asked the group to leave. At least 40 people were arrested.

Authorities said the crowd was "large and unruly." Earlier Tuesday, police declared a tactical alert which officials say was a preemptive measure due to Election Day.
