As national gas prices drop, California gets ready to pay more

Posted
and last updated

The prices at the pump are about to get more expensive. Starting next month, the California state gas tax is going to be increasing by a nickle and a half.

You might recall in November Prop 6 failed to pass and repeal the increase in taxes at the pump. The money is supposed to be used to fix the states crumbling road infrastructure.

Currently, the tax is 55 cents per gallon and will jump to more than 60 cents in taxes. It was signed into law by then-Governor Jerry Brown in 2017.

While gas prices around the state increase, the average price of gas for the country is actually dropping. Latest reports show the average price of gas dropped 11 cents per gallon over the past week, bringing the national average to $2.73 cents per gallon
