SACRAMENTO, Calif. — On Friday, Gov. Newsom and state leaders announced they want to use $16.7 millions dollars from the state's general fund to help those fleeing from Afghanistan.

The money would be used to provide cash assistance and other help for refugees who don't qualify for federal refugee benefits and public assistance programs.

The request is expected to be considered during next week's legislative session.
