The California Highway Patrol released the arrest numbers for their 2020 New Year's maximum enforcement period, showing less than half as many arrests were made compared to last year.
CHP made 491 arrests for DUI statewide during their 30-hour enforcement period. Last year the CHP New Year's maximum enforcement period lasted 102 hours and resulted in 1,140 arrests statewide.
During maximum enforcement periods, all available officers are on roadways. They will focus on impaired drivers, but officers will also watch for distracted driving, speeding and seat belt violations while being at the service of motorists who need help.
Last month CHP help another 30-hour maximum enforcement period over the Christmas holiday. During that time, at least 10 deadly crashes and 271 arrests statewide were DUI related.
