California State Parks will be reopening campgrounds once again at the Oceano Dunes and Pismo State Beach starting Friday.

This is Phase 2 of State Parks' three-phased reopening plan.

This latest phase will allow people to once again stay overnight, although there will be some restrictions.

"I am happy for people that they will be able to once again camp. I've camped here many times and I've loved it,” Orcutt resident Nan Lippitt said.

Phase 1 of the plan for both Oceano Dunes and Pismo SB started on October 30 of last year.

Phase 2 will allow the following:

  • 100 campsites
  • 1,000 street-legal vehicles per day
  • 1,000 green sticker off-highway vehicles per day

State Parks officials said the renting of off-highway vehicles will remain closed for now.

"We are excited to have those opportunities back open and available to our visitors who have been, you know, waiting for this since the pandemic began back in March of last year,” Oceano State Parks Superintendent Kevin Pearce said.

A long-awaited opportunity that many people are looking forward to enjoying later this week.

Resident Michael Moir said he's ready to book a campsite on the dunes but has a reminder for other visitors.

"Please take out what you bring in regarding trash. I get a bag every time I come in and pick it and fill it up every day. That's my biggest thing. Take out what you bring in,” Moir said.

With limited availability and high demand, State Parks advises people to make sure there is space available before heading out to the dunes.

“Please plan ahead for your visit. Make sure you get your reservations if you want to come camp with us on the beach. Check with us on Twitter and Facebook and make sure you follow us there and keep posted on our current conditions,” Pearce said.

A date for Phase 3 of the reopening plans has not been determined yet.
