SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Members of the California Legislature who are considered at risk of contracting COVID-19 will now be allowed to vote remotely.

The state assembly said it is necessary to allow members to vote remotely following an outbreak at the state capital last month.

The legislature's lawyers say the new rule might be illegal. Critics say legal challenges to letting members vote remotely could end up leading to the cancellation of any legislation that is passed.
