The 2-year-old found dead in a duffel bag at a U.S.-Mexico border crossing had been drowned and malnourished, a San Diego County prosecutor said Friday as reported by 10News in San Diego.

Earlier this week a Whittier man tried crossing the San Ysidro border with a bag carrying the child’s body.

John Lewis Hartley, 38, and his companion, Mercy Mary Becerra, 43, pleaded not guilty to a murder charge. Each was held on $2 million bail, KGTV reported.

Hartley and Becerra knew the victim’s parents, according to the district attorney. The motive for the killing is unknown.
