Democrats swept key races on Tuesday in New York City, New Jersey and Virginia.

Abigail Spanberger defeated Republican Winsome Earle-Sears to become the first female governor of Virginia. Her victory flips the governorship from Republican to Democrat.

In New Jersey, Democrat Mikie Sherrill defeated Republican Jack Ciattarelli. The GOP was hoping to flip the office, but fell short.

Across the Hudson River, New York City voters elected a new mayor. Democrat Zohran Mamdani defeated former Gov. Andrew Cuomo to become the city's city’s first Muslim mayor. Cuomo received a last-minute endorsement from President Donald Trump. The president has attacked Mamdani — a Democratic socialist — and threatened to pull federal funding if he wins.

All three Democratic victories are being widely viewed as a referendum on Trump. They are the first major contests since he took office earlier this year.

However, claimed the election was not about him.

“TRUMP WASN’T ON THE BALLOT, AND SHUTDOWN, WERE THE TWO REASONS THAT REPUBLICANS LOST ELECTIONS TONIGHT, according to Pollsters," President Trump said on Truth Social.

Meanwhile, in California, voters supported a measure for a new congressional map, part of a nationwide redistricting battle. The proposed map would give Democrats an edge in several districts, following similar efforts in Texas, where Republicans recently redrew boundaries to strengthen their hold on key seats.
