Questions surround the accuracy of the government's claim that a man in the country illegally threatened to assassinate President Donald Trump.

A day after the Department of Homeland Security announced Ramon Morales Reyes' arrest, CNN reported, citing a high-level law enforcement source, that authorities determined the man did not write a letter threatening Trump's life.

The original information released from Homeland Security showed a handwritten letter, allegedly from the 54-year-old man, which stated he would self-deport after he shot President Trump at one of his rallies.

In a statement to Scripps News, the Milwaukee Police Department said it is “investigating an identity theft and victim intimidation incident related to this case.” The department did not release any names and noted that the investigation is ongoing and no criminal charges have been filed at this time.

The man was originally being held at a jail in Wisconsin while ICE prepares to remove him from the country.

CNN said it reached out to Homeland Security about its exclusive report, but the department did not provide a comment.
