At Mira Monte High School the Lions can't stop scoring goals. Credit of course goes to the forwards but specifically Alizhar Magali. Alizhar came to the US from Yemen back in 2010 having played little soccer but once he started playing with his teammates he quickly fell in love with the game.
While learning a new language has been tough if anything has been lost in translation it's quickly won back with his smile and demeanor. And while he's still worried about how his English sounds, he's letting his game do the talking. 6 goals and 3 assists through the Lions first 7 games have Mira Monte off on a blistering pace.
"He pressures the defense with his non-stop energy and forces them to make mistakes," said second year head coach Ben Warren. "He capitalizes on it."
And it's that intense work ethic that's earned him the nickname "Energizer Bunny" from his coaches. While he's looking ahead to the rest of the year he can't help but be motivated by when the team fell short to league foe South last season.
"We win against them and then always lose in the last minute," said Magali. But if he can keep up his scoring streak and Mira Monte keeps winning there's a chance the Lions can go further than they ever have before and finally get past their biggest league foe.
