Ridgeview's senior captain Christian Garcia doesn't mince words when talking about his team in the past. "To be honest we used to suck. Like we were horrible," he said.
But this season something changed. The Wolf Pack won their first league title and went all the way to a valley championship. All of it under first year coach Phil Collignon who insists he just got lucky.
"I don't want anyone to think I did anything special," said Collignon whose team finished the year 21-4-1.He may not have done anything special but his players certainly did.
In last Friday's valley title game, Christian scored the first goal, a free kick with incredible bend that he still can't believe went in."Ooo dang," he said watching the video of the goal. "I just watch this everyday."
Hector Martinez went on to score the winning goal with just four minutes left and Ridgeview soccer finally got to hoist some hardware.
But it was Christian's goal that got it all started and was his 33rd goal of the season and as routine as he made it look, it was actually the first free kick he scored all year."We didn't have too many opportunities!" said Collignon
Maybe it was the stage or maybe it was the spectacle but he still gets calls about the kick."My family is like dang that was an amazing goal. All my friends too-they were just saying congrats and it was a great goal."
Ridgeview will play in a state playoff game Tuesday but they will not know who or where they are playing until Monday.
