Bakersfield Christian graduate and quarterback of the Oakland Raiders, Derek Carr, has reportedly agreed on a 5-year, $125 million extension with the Raiders.

This morning, his brother Darren, head football coach at BCHS, got an alert on his phone and immediately told his players who were practicing. "Coach Derek's got lunch and dinner planned out," Carr said. "Anytime he's here it's on him."
Across town at Canyon Hills Church the news was also well received. "Just knowing that it's going to Derek...that's awesome!" said Joseph Rountree, a pastor at the church. Rountree couldn't believe the timing of the announcement because in just 3 days time, Carr will be speaking at his church. "Just to come out and see Derek as a product of Bakersfield because he's an incredible speaker," Rountree said. "You might think 'Oh he's kind of this token speaker. He's a quarterback.' But he's got incredible substance."
It's that substance that he picked up at least in part right here in Bakersfield that brother Darren says hasn't changed. "You go to his house, he's still wearing the same Fresno State Bulldog Nike shorts that he did at college 5-6 years ago," he said.
Derek will be in town Saturday night for a fundraiser at BCHS before speaking Sunday morning at Liberty Christian Center at 9:00 AM. Finally Carr will speak at the Upper Room in downtown Bakersfield. The free event will also have a car show, live music, food trucks and raffle items. For more information call (661) 871-1150.
