Male Athlete of the Week: Jack Han

Few coaches have the experience of Bakersfield Christian's Frank Thiessen. With 55 years of coaching he's seen plenty of good players but he calls Jack Han a great player.

"It's very unique that someone wins it (league) more than a year," said Thiessen who's been the Eagles coach for 12 years. Han just won league for the 3rd year in a row but this time had to beat his teammate Leon Germeroth in the final.

"I had a lot of fun," said Han. "It was a different atmosphere." Perhaps no one knows more about a "different atmosphere" than Han who's been splitting time this Spring between tennis and track and field creating what he calls a "broad schedule."

"Hard track workouts are on Monday. Tuesdays and Thursdays typically there's tennis matches. Wednesdays I'll hit a track workout and usually there's a track meet on Fridays," he said.

That leaves room for some light tennis on Saturdays and a Sunday rest day yet he's still been able to become one of the best tennis players in the valley. He finished the regular season 22-1 and only played tennis 3-4 days a week.

It's that dedication and planning from Han at the top that Coach Thiessen says elevates the bottom of the team. "When people like that win and other people see it they're impressed by what's been accomplished," said Thiessen.

All that's left now is an improvement from last year's quarterfinal finish at valley. "Goal is definitely to get back to valley. Do better than last year, make a semi-final, finish top four-top two and if I put myself in that position then try and win it."
