Female Athlete of the Week: Kayla Scott

At Garces High School things went south quick. First year coach Jesse Soto describes it as drowning in injuries. "We just had everyone back probably the last three games," he said.

Since everyone has come back the team has been on a roll. This Wednesday they were in their closest game of the season against league foe Centennial.  A time for senior leaders to step up. "She's going to find the right people and she's going to want the ball in big moments," said Soto.

And there were none bigger for senior point guard Kayla Scott then when the game was tied at 40 with seconds on the clock. Coach Soto initially drew up the play for their top scorer Celeste West but after it broke down Kayla was aggressive enough to draw the foul. From there it was no easy task with the pressure on.

"I had to block everything out I had to focus on myself and I'm like calm down," said Scott.
After she coolly made the first, with Coach Soto sweating on the sidelines, a line violation took away her second free throw and kept it a 1 point game.

From there her defense, her favorite part of the game, helped force Centennial to take a poor shot and give the Rams their fourth straight win. "Those are just the kind of players that you need that make big plays in crunch time and that's what she does," said senior Celeste West.

While she's usually one to pass it off to her teammates-it's in those clutch moments where she's shown Garces has a chance to win another league title.
