While Kern County residents have long been inspired by the story of the state champions from the McFarland cross country team, it took Disney's movie adaptation McFarland, USA for a country to find out.

One such person was Leo Manzano, a silver medalist in the 2012 London Olympic Games (1500 m). He wanted to come to McFarland since the movie came out in 2015 and this week, thanks to a trip to Sacramento, it finally worked out.

Manzano spoke to nearly 150 people about his running career, work ethic and the need to keep a positive attitude at a last minute event held at McFarland High School Sunday afternoon.

Runners from Bakersfield, Visalia and Fresno came to the event.
