Yesenia Sorto giving her all for Foothill soccer; earns athlete of the week honors

When you've been around the game of soccer as long as ninth year Foothill coach Stephanie Hall, you start to expect a lot. While a 2nd place finish in league was disappointing she had a message for her girls that her season could still be saved. "Our record doesn't matter if we win the games that matter," she said. "Right now we're in the playoffs and the only thing that matters is if we get the result."

This week the Trojans got a result that mattered. Junior Yesenia Sorto scored two goals to seal a first round playoff win over Fresno.

Sorto has been a top goal scorer all season, but for coach Hall it all comes down to her work ethic. "She's the kind of player who leaves everything on the field and you're never going to question her dedication," Hall said.

Giving her best on every play and every drill, leading by example is something she had to learn but a trait she doesn't take lightly. "From day one we've had great leaders on this team," Hall recalled. "I pulled a couple of them aside and said 'Hey, she's following your lead, lead her the right way."

That early conversation, when a senior took her under their wing, is where Sorto still draws her motivation. She emotionally told 23ABC, "I give it my best because I just want to make her proud."

No doubt the senior would be proud of her recent goal scoring.

Pending rain Foothill is scheduled to play #1 Kingsburg in the D-IV quarterfinals Thursday at 6:00 PM.
