BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KERO) — Gov. Gavin Newsom made statements during a press conference Wednesday saying he wants youth sports back on the field.

During the briefing. Newsom said he and his staff have listened to and studied the data provided by an advocacy group that urges the resumption of sports immediately, if not sooner.

One of the sports mentioned during Newsom's statements was track and field, with Newsom stating the little-to-no-contact sport could easily return.

For Liberty High School track and field coach Ryan Renz, this news was hopeful, to say the least.

Coach Renz said that although he's excited to hear the governor mention track and field, but he'd be happy for any sport to start again. He said the most important thing to him to get kids back out on the field.

The governor's remarks extended beyond track and field. Newsom specifically called out football as one of the biggest driving forces behind the state's decisions.
