"For me, it's not really about them winning it's more about hey let's get something going something tangible something they can hold on to, and that's really been the goal for me to get them going."

WASCO, Calif. — After nearly a year without local high school sports competition, Wasco High School became the first county school to host a live event in a cross country dual meet with Bakersfield Christian.

Wasco seniors Crystal Raya and Gerardo Limon finished first in their respective girls and boys races. For the all the athletes and coaches involved, completing a high school competition was the real victory.

"I didn't process just how excited am but my kids know that I've been waiting a whole year to make to get them out there," Wasco Cross Country Head Coach Omar Garcia said. "For me it's not really about them winning it's more about hey let's get something going something tangible something they can hold on to and that's really been the goal for me to get them going."

The Tigers will host a back-to-back dual meet with the Garces Memorial cross country team on Thursday at 4 p.m. And while both teams hope to have more races down the line, this week's events are the only ones on the schedule.
