What is a supermoon?

and last updated

December's full moon, also known as the Cold Moon, will shine in the sky on Sunday night.

December's full moon is also the first and last supermoon of 2017.

A supermoon only occurs when the full moon is the closest to the Earth, or at its perigee, and during this time, it can appear up to 14 percent larger and 30 percent brighter.

The moon becomes totally full at 10:47 a.m. EST on Sunday, Dec. 3. It officially reaches its perigee that night on Dec. 4 at 3:45 a.m.

On average, the moon is 238,000 miles from Earth, and on Sunday night, the moon will be a mere 222,135 miles from Earth.
