What hurricane hunters see inside Hurricane Irma

Posted

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration flies airplanes into hurricanes and tropical storms on a regular basis.

It's not every day, however, they fly into a Category 5 storm and one of the strongest storms ever recorded in the Atlantic.

On September 5, aerospace engineer Nick Underwood filmed inside Hurricane Irma from NOAA's WP-3D Orion.

Meteorologists and other scientists fly into these storms to get a better understanding of a storm's strength and where it's headed.
