BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Smart & Final stores are requiring customers to wear face masks in order to shop.

Residents and 23ABC were able to confirm seeing a sign on a local store's front door saying that customers must be wearing a face mask in order to shop.

According to one resident, she claimed she was told by an employee that the new policy was a company-wide policy. In response, Smart & Final offered the following statement:

Smart & Final is committed to the health of our communities, and we are doing everything we can to provide a safe and comfortable shopping experience. In-line with regulations enacted in several counties throughout California in an effort to reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19, our associates and customers are required to wear a face covering while in stores.

Additionally, to encourage social distancing, we are managing the flow of traffic into our stores and staggering our checkout lines as needed, we have installed plexiglass shields at the registers of all our stores, and we are conducting cleanings at the top of every hour.
