Coroner's Office identifies suspect who died while in-custody

BAKERSFIELD, Calif — The Kern County Coroner's Office identified the man who died while in-custody as 42-year-old Bakersfield resident Robert Bruce Waters.

According to the Kern County Sheriff's Office, the department responded after calls came in about a domestic violence incident. The incident involved an armed male at the 2700 block of Park Meadow Drive.

KCSO said when they responded, Waters did not comply with orders given by officers at the scene. KCSO said officers used forced to get the suspect into custody.

Medical aid was called for an evaluation and the Warters began having medical issues a little after the call was made, according to KCSO. Deputies offered medical aid until medical personnel arrived but Waters was declared dead at the scene.

KCSO detectives took over the investigation and the officers involved were placed on administrative leave.
