BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — A pizza delivery driver was driving down Union Avenue Sunday night when their vehicle was shot several times, according to the Bakersfield Police Department.

BPD said the driver had been in the area of Manor Street around 9:41 p.m. Sunday when another vehicle began following them. The vehicle then began firing several shots at the pizza delivery driver, hitting the vehicle but not the driver.

BPD said the pizza delivery driver arrived at a hospital later that evening and reported the incident. Later that night, BPD officers located a vehicle that matched the suspect vehicle description. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle but the suspect attempted to flee, leading officers on a pursuit.

Officers were able to stop the vehicle and arrest 33-year-old Jeffrey Leonard. Leonard was identified as the suspect in the shooting offense. He was booked into the Kern County Jail for charges associated with the aggravated assault and vehicle pursuit.

The motive for the initial shooting is still under investigation. Anyone with information regarding this investigation is encouraged to call the Bakersfield Police Department at (661) 327-7111.
