For years, shopping in Delano has often meant getting in the car and heading out of town. But that could soon change as Target prepares to open a new location right here in the city.
“I’m pretty excited to have another place to shop at because sometimes you can't find something here so then you have to go out of town to Target or somewhere else to find it so I’m pretty excited,” said Delano resident Rubi Hernandez.
Local Rubi Hernandez isn't alone. Others also say having a Target nearby will save time, and provide more of a variety.
"Right now, the only thing that is here is Walmart and thank goodness I just heard that Target is coming and we're just waiting, anticipating when,” said Delano local Aida Ramirez.
And while Target is set to improve overall options for shopping, it isn't the only thing it's doing.
The mayor of Delano says the new Target is more than just a store — it represents an investment in the city's future.
In a statement, Salvador Solorio-Ruiz says in part quote, "This project is expected to create approximately 170 new jobs, jobs that will help families put food on the table, thrive in our community and open doors towards stability work and career growth."
It's not just residents paying attention. Carlos Martinez operates and manages Monster Deals on Main Street, a liquidation store that sells big-box store products that have pulled from the shelves.
Taking a tour of the store, Martinez says they are not worried about any competition due to their competitive prices.
"You could see packages of boxers, they go for $8 with us, a full package that's actually from Target,” said Martinez. “I believe this probably goes for $15 at the store or so."
Target is expected to open its Delano location in March of 2026.
