22-year-old man killed in crash, suspected driver arrested for felony DUI

SHAFTER, Calif. — A 22-year-old man was killed in a rollover crash in Shafter Friday morning.

According to the Shafter Police Department, around 4:22 a.m. on May 31, Shafter PD received a call of a single vehicle rollover crash on Santa Fe Way just south of Burbank Street.

When officers arrived, they found a red pickup truck that had veered off the roadway and rolled over.

Twenty-two-year-old Rene Daniel Chavez from Shafter was an occupant in the truck and died in the crash. Shafter PD says the Coroner and District Attorney's Crime Lab were contacted to assist in the investigation and notify next of kin.

Shafter PD says the suspected driver, 22-year-old Miguel Palayo, Jr. from Shafter, was located standing in the proximity of the truck and was medically evaluated. He was then arrested for felony DUI.

Shafter PD says the investigation is on-going.
