Here at 23ABC we read for a living, and that's why it's so important to us to foster the joy of reading in our youngest viewers.
So for the past few months, our employees have been donating portions of our paychecks to create a fund for our campaign called "If You Give A Child A Book". We raised a few thousand dollars on our own, and then the Scripps Howard Foundation, a partner of our parent company, matched our donation to double the amount, for a grand total of more than eight thousand dollars!
Scholastic publishers then offered a discount to our beneficiary, the Kern Literacy Council, who just received their first shipment of donated books this week.
"It's so exciting," said Laura Lollar Wolfe, the Executive Director of the Kern Literacy Council. "Because your employees were so generous, and then with the matching from the company and then Scholastic making us a deal, we've got- this is almost 2,000 books! And we haven't even spent two-thirds of the money!"
As for the remainder of that money, they're going to spend the rest of it buying Clifford The Big Red Dog books to hand out at a school assembly 23ABC is hosting on national reading day coming up in January.
