SACREMENTO, Calif. — The California Highway patrol will host a memorial ceremony to honor the officers who have put their lives on the line to protect and serve.
On May 7, the CHP will honor Officer Kirk Griess, a motor officer from Solano County. Officer Griess was killed during an enforcement stop on Interstate 80 on August 10, 2018. His name will be formally added to the memorial fountain at the CHP Academy. Special recognition will also be paid to Sergeant Steven Licon, of the Riverside Area, who died following a collision during a traffic stop on April 6, 2019. Sergeant Licon will be formally memorialized in the 2020 ceremony.
Every year, the CHP pays tribute to those brave heroes who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty and afford special honor to those who died in the previous calendar year. In the CHP’s 90-year history, 230 heroes have lost their lives while courageously serving the people of California.
