BAKERSIFELD, Calif. — The two people who died Friday in a hit-and-run crash on Northbound Highway 99, south of Hosking Avenue, have been identified.
The coroner's office said 18-year-old Chandler Bay Lin and 24-year-old Donald Angelo Mcrae were heading Northbound on the 99, around 6 p.m., when they were involved in a crash with a semi truck. The driver of the semi truck, 57-year-old Arelio Castaneda of Tulare, fled the scene but was reportedly tracked down by a good Samaritan.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the good Samaritan followed Castaneda to a Fastrip on Airport Drive and Decatur Street in Oildale. CHP responded to the Fastrip and arrested Castaneda. CHP said they are seeking felony hit-and-run charges but no charges have been filed yet.
At least two vehicles were involved in the crash with the semi truck. Lin and Mcrae were both driving in a 2007 Hyundai Electra. A third passenger, 20-year-old Adonis Malik Jones, was driving in the same car. He was taken to Kern Medical with major injuries.
The driver of the other vehicle, 31-year-old Nelba Tapia, sustained minor injuries.
The crash closed down several lanes of traffic Friday night.
