The country music singer, songwriter and guitarist Buck Owens was born 91 years ago today.

Alvis Edgar Owens was born on August 12, 1929 in Sherman, Texas. He was raised in Arizona, where he dropped out of eighth grade and taught himself to play both acoustic and steel guitar.

He signed with Capitol Records in 1957, formed The Buckaroos in 1962, and was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1996.

He passed away at his home in Bakersfield on March 25, 2006.
