Death of man involved in altercation with Bakersfield police ruled homicide

According to the coroner's office, the death of 63-year-old Jose Cesar Vilorio has been ruled a homicide and his cause of death is blunt force trauma with neck compression.

Vilorio was involved in an altercation with Bakersfield police officers on October 3, 2016 when he became unresponsive. He was transported to San Joaquin Hospital where he was pronounced dead on October 4, 2016 at 4:02 p.m.

According to the Bakersfield Police Department, the two officers involved, Zachary Burdick and Timothy McIrvin, are on modified duty and will remain in that status until the investigation is reviewed by the Critical Incident Review Board.
