Delano detectives say celebratory gunfire may be cause of shooting death

DELANO, Calif. — Detectives with the Delano Polcie Department say that celebratory gunfire may have been the cause of a shooting death that took place just after midnight on New Year's Day.

Just before 12:30 a.m., on Tuesday,DPD responded to the Delano Regional Medical Center regarding a person who had recently sustained a gunshot wound.

Patrol officers were directed to a 49-year-old Zeferino Santos Perfecto, who had succumbed to his wounds. According to police, it was found that Santos was at a family gathering near 700 Fremont Street and was shot shortly after midnight.

According to the Delano Police Department,at approximately 3:40 p.m. on Tuesday, Aruelio Perfecto Aguilar, 48, was arrested and charged with murder.

Aguilar was arrested without incident and the weapon used in the murder is believed to have been seized by detectives.

Detectives do not believe this to be gang related and unlawful celebratory gunfire cannot be ruled out.
