Coroner identifies man killed after struck by suspected DUI driver on Union Avenue

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — The Kern County Coroner's Office identified the the victim of a deadly vehicle versus pedestrian crash as 56-year-old Rick Luis Bermudez. According to the Bakersfield Police Department, Bermudez was struck by a suspected drunk unlicensed driver.

On May 20, at approximately 11:51 p.m. BPD responded to the 400 block of Union Avenue regarding an injury traffic collision.

Following and investigation, it was revealed that 24-year-old William Chavez-Castro was traveling through a green traffic signal light at Union Avenue and 4th Street when he struck Bermudez crossing the roadway against a red traffic signal light.

Bermudez was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers determined Chavez-Castro was an unlicensed driver, and was driving under the influence of alcohol.

Chavez-Castro was arrested booked into the Kern County Jail.
