BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — A fundraiser held at a local sandwich shop raised more than $3,000 for the family of David Marcus.
Carrie Asbury, owner of the Jersey Mike's on Coffee Road, said Tuesday's fundraiser for Marcus' family raised more than $3,200, though the final total is still being calculated.
The sandwich shop's fundraiser promised 20% of proceeds from Tuesday's sales to go to Marcus' family, as well as a raffle basket that was set up there. Asbury added that some customers made specific donations to the fundraiser, even outside the sales percentage.
Asbury says around $1,700 of that total has already been given to Marcus' family in cash donations, and a check for the rest will be delivered soon.
Marcus was considered an inspiration around Bakersfield, having battled cancer more than a half-dozen times. At the end of June, his family announced he was going into hospice care, and on June 28, Marcus passed away.
Local crowd-sourcing efforts raised more than $5,000 to pay for a star outside the Bakersfield Fox Theater.
