BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — On Monday the Kern County Fair Board of directors met for the third time since allegations surfaced that the fair misused hundreds of thousands of dollars, and violated multiple state laws.
The fair has only met publicly two times before this. Both times the board was met with several frustrated citizens who wanted answers about the audit.
October's board meeting ended in a shouting match when board members refused to answer questions from the public. The board said they won't comment on the alleged misuse of state funds.
Monday's meeting had a different tone.
The meetings typically start with public comment. In previous meetings, the public comment portion was stacked with concerned citizens asking the board about the alleged misuse of funds. On Sunday when it was time for public comment, not one person stood up. In fact, it didn’t seem like there was anyone at the meeting outside of those directly involved with the fair.
During the meeting, the board of directors talked about a wide range of topics including a finance committee report and their 2020 budget.Fair officials declined to comment about the state audit.
