LONE PINE, Calif. — A 4.6-magnitude earthquake struck the area of Lone Pine in Central California Monday evening, just 60 miles out of Ridgecrest.

Preliminary data from the U.S. Geological Survey showed the tremor had a depth of 2.17 miles around 5:25 p.m. Monday.

According to the USGS, the quake was closely followed by a 3.8-magnitude and 2.9-magnitude aftershock.

Dr. Lucy Jones tweeted Monday night saying the quake that struck around 5:25 p.m. hit just 20 miles north of the northern edge of the Ridgecrest aftershock zone. Jones said this indicates it is not directly related.

Jones said it also appears to be on a different fault. Preliminary focal mechanism suggests this could be on the Sierra Nevadan frontal fault.
