BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — The Bakersfield man who officials said stopped breathing while in California Highway Patrol custody last week has died, according to Bakersfield Police Department.
On August 30, 40-year-old Bakersfield resident Jason Gonzalez, who was initially identified through family members, was detained by CHP after allegedly walking through traffic on Highway 58.
The Bakersfield Police Department says Gonzalez became combative and resistant with officers when they approached him that morning. Gonzalez's family told 23ABC that they do not know why he was walking on the freeway, but they say they know one thing, that he wasn't typically the type to fight.
According to Bakersfield Police Gonzalez passed away Wednesday afternoon.
According to the Kern County coroner a postmortem examination was performed but his cause and manner of death are still pending.
