Mexicali West on California Avenue is set to close.
In a letter, the restaurant announced that it will close its Southwest Bakersfield location on or about December 31. According to the letter, 55 employees will be affected. The restaurant announced that employee separations will "commence and conclude on or about December 31."
Kenneth Gamez, one of the owners, says he is retiring and sold the building. The building, which has been there since 1976, is currently in escrow.
"It's been a nice run," Gamez said. "This spot was the edge of town then. CSU wasn't there. There was nothing out here. My mom and sister took a big gamble here and it paid off."
According to Gamez, all of the employees have been offered positions at the 18th Street location in Central Bakersfield. Gamez says the 18th Street location is staying open and is still owned by the family.
"We're not leaving anyone behind if they're willing to move to that location," Gamez said.
